Sebastian Kommerell
Like the impressionists, Sebastian Kommerell was always in the search for light. After searching interesting atmospheres in the surroundings of Rietzer Berg by walking or cycling, he went off with canvas, paint and paintbrush to paint outside.
The aspect of time plays a major role when painting in nature, because the atmosphere is to be caught before the light changes again. That is why Sebastian didn't make any sketches before, but painted directly with oil paint on canvas - sometimes even without a paintbrush but directly out of the tube.
An important aspect of his stay at the hermitage was the fireplace. He spent a lot of time keeping it going, collecting wood, listening to the cracking and reading in front of it. The homely atmosphere of the hermitage was nearly a spiritual place for Sebastian and felt a bit like home.
For the artist and musician of Potsdam there are many similarities between painting and music. Both have the goal to carry away the observer or listener and to create the same response that he felt himself when painting of playing. But the time in the residence was supposed to be dedicated mostly to painting for which he doesn't have enough time in his everyday life. He only played the piano in the evenings for relaxing or for his little daughter via video call for her to fall asleep. And for a spontaneous concert at the Thanksgiving party of the association which perfectly accompanied the communal cooking and eating.
